The important phrase there is animal models. Results in mice or laboratory experiments cannot automatically be translated into proven benefits for human neuropathy.
Nevertheless, such findings can help explain why California poppy has remained a popular ingredient in traditional calming and pain-support preparations.
California Poppy May Support Relaxation Without Being an Opioid
One of the misconceptions I occasionally see is the assumption that every plant carrying the word “poppy” must act like an opioid. That is not a good way to think about California poppy.
Its phytochemistry is different, and the plant contains various alkaloids that researchers have studied for nervous-system activity.
Research has investigated whether some California poppy constituents may interact with GABA-related pathways. Laboratory work examining isolated alkaloids has found modulatory effects involving certain GABA-A receptor subtypes.

Can You Take Passion Flower and California Poppy Together?
