If I were asked to summarize my approach to brain-healthy eating in a few words, I would say this: eat more plants, prioritize healthy fats, include quality protein sources, choose whole foods more often, and think in terms of years rather than days.

The foods I would personally prioritize include leafy green vegetables, berries, fatty fish, walnuts and other nuts, extra-virgin olive oil, beans, lentils, whole grains, avocado, eggs, cruciferous vegetables, tomatoes, seeds, plain yogurt, and a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.

None of them is a miracle treatment. Together, however, they form the backbone of dietary patterns that have repeatedly attracted attention in research on cardiovascular health, healthy aging, and cognition.

Perhaps the most important shift I have made is moving away from the idea of eating individual “superfoods.” I would rather eat blueberries because they are part of a varied diet than because I believe they possess magical memory-enhancing powers. I would rather eat salmon as part of a balanced Mediterranean-style meal than swallow a long list of supplements while ignoring the quality of my everyday diet.

Current research also gives me a reason to stay humble. Observational evidence around Mediterranean and MIND eating patterns is encouraging, and some studies have associated these diets with slower cognitive decline or fewer markers of Alzheimer’s-related brain pathology. At the same time, clinical trials have not produced uniformly positive results. The National Institute on Aging therefore appropriately describes the evidence as mixed rather than declaring that a particular diet can prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

That is the message I think readers deserve.

Eating well is not a guarantee against dementia, memory loss, or neurological disease. Genetics, age, cardiovascular health, environmental factors, medical conditions, and many other influences matter. But food is one factor I can influence repeatedly, meal after meal.

For me, that makes it worth paying attention to.

Instead of asking which single food will make my brain healthier, I prefer asking a better question: What kind of diet am I giving my brain consistently?

When my answer includes plenty of vegetables, berries and other fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, fish, and minimally processed foods, I know I am at least moving in a direction supported by some of the strongest nutritional patterns currently being studied for healthy aging.

And that is a much more realistic approach to brain health than searching for a miracle food.
